It’s scary to jump into new things.
For months, I’ve been exploring the site Medium, a forum where content creators and writers can share articles, which are then curated and sent to subscribers. I’ve found some interesting content there, and my thought was that it might be a good place to share some of my work.
But I was nervous.
I know, it seems silly to worry about. I write, and Medium is for writers. A no brainer. But both the choice of a new network and my subject matter gave me pause.
I’m not a fan of awards shows. I tend to watch responses via social media to keep up. This past weekend the BET Awards aired, and without Facebook I would have been totally unaware. However, that changed when responses began to pepper my timeline about hip-hop artists Lecrae and his reaction to winning an award for Gospel music. I found the link and watched the thirty second clip. I couldn’t see anything controversial about it. Then today I searched for the speech again in order to write about it, only to find another acceptance speech was making the social media rounds – this time by Chance the Rapper.
The contrast was palpable. Here were two faith-centered artists, enduring very different spins on the social media landscape. I don’t often jump into debates in the news cycle, but this topic lands right where my interests and passions intersect – music, culture, faith and how we use our influence as artists.
Put two and two together, and here’s the point. I’ve written my first ‘current events’ journalistic style post.
I invite you to check out the post, and even if you don’t, try out Medium. It’s a great tool for learning and exploring divergent points of view. If you’re not learning and exploring how people feel about things, you’re in danger of being stuck. Just like I was.
Key word? “Was.”
